Cuts at Ryanair raise concern for Murcia airport flights
The Irish airline accounted for almost half of Corvera’s traffic between January and July this year

As the summer flight season draws close to its end, which is usually at the end of October, and operations reduce until March 2026, Ryanair’s latest capacity cuts are causing concern for staff at the Region of Murcia International Airport.
The airline, which represents 49.4% of traffic at Corvera, has announced reductions for the 2025-2026 winter season, and there are fears that it could affect the number and frequency of flights to and from Murcia.
Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson confirmed a cut of close to 1 million seats across Spain, a move that heightens tensions with airport management company Aena and Spain’s Ministry of Transport. Relations have soured since Aena accused Ryanair of blackmail earlier this year, following repeated threats to scale back services at secondary airports over higher fees and a lack of incentives.
Back in February, Minister for Transport Óscar Puente revealed that he had rejected Ryanair’s development plan for 14 Spanish airports. The airline had sought to reverse a 4% fare increase, secure steep discounts on fees, and obtain public aid from local and regional authorities, demands which Puente described as ‘absurd’.
With the government refusing concessions and a 6.6% tariff rise planned for 2026, Ryanair has begun shifting capacity towards larger Spanish airports and other markets including Italy, Sweden, Croatia, Hungary and Morocco.
At the same time, easyJet has confirmed that it will increase its Murcia flight offering from the UK this winter, having decided to extend its Bristol and London Luton connections into the off-season.
