The Casa de las Contribuciones in Totana

A Modernist building alongside the Town Hall and parish church of Totana

The Casa de las Contribuciones in TotanaThe Casa de las Contribuciones is a Modernist building which stands alongside the Plaza de la Constitución The Casa de las Contribuciones in Totanain Totana, providing a contrast with the architecture of the parish church of Santiago and the main Town Hall building in the same square.

This is one of a large number of buildings which sprang up in numerous towns and cities of the Region of Murcia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this instance, though, it was not built by a wealthy merchant or an industrial family, as was often the case in Cartagena and Murcia, but in order to collect and administer municipal property taxes: hence the name by which it is commonly known, the “Contributions House”.(see History of Totana)

Among the eclectic architectural features are the crenellated walls, the profusely decorated columns, a sumptuous first-floor balcony and the small tower or turret, while the interior contains a central patio area to provide light and airiness. The building now houses Town Hall offices and is not open for public visits.
