The Monolith of Independence in Los Alcázares
The Monolith of Independence celebrates the creation of the municipality of Los Alcázares in 1983
Situated on the esplanade by Playa Carrión, this monolith was erected to mark the boundary between the towns of Torre Pacheco and San Javier, before Los Alcazares was given municipal autonomy on 13th October 1983.
Los Alcázares is the youngest municipality in the Región de Murcia, although it is the oldest known population centre in the Mar Menor, and has had the same name for more than 800 years.
This monument was unveiled in 1993 to mark the celebration of the tenth anniversary of municipal autonomy.
During the month of October the town of Los Alcazares holds an annual week-long celebration featuring live music, shows, windsurfing competitions and firework displays to celebrate their date of independence, a festival which includes the Día del Caldero, the day on which the whole town gathers on the beach to enjoy the dish of caldero, a fish and rice speciality which is the signature dish of the Mar Menor and well worth sampling if the opportunity arises!
