VIDEO: New padel and pickleball complex now open at Roda Golf & Beach Resort
The facilities at Roda Golf Plaza features five courts and academy classes with changing rooms and shop to come
Roda Golf & Beach Resort has opened a new private padel and pickleball facility, the Roda Padel Reserve.
The facility has five courts, four of them panoramic and one tour-standard court. The facility is open every day of the year and players can book courts through the Roda Padel Reserve app, via Matchi or through the website.
The Padel Academy is already running classes from Monday to Thursday in the afternoons, with new groups and activities set to launch soon. For now, players can use the changing rooms and other facilities at the Roda Golf Clubhouse, although dedicated changing rooms and a shop are planned for the padel complex in the near future.
The project is being led by Carlos Melenchón, a professional with extensive experience in the sports world. The facility will have its own brand identity, dedicated social media channels and an official website where people can follow the latest developments.
The checkered history of padel courts at Roda Golf
It comes after residents of Roda Golf & Beach Resort roundly rejected a proposal to fund the building of padel courts on council land back in February.
That original plan involved developing padel courts alongside a café and other amenities, all open to both residents and the general public. Those in favour argued it would vastly improve what Roda Golf resort had to offer and bring in more income from local sports fans and holidaymakers. But property owners had some serious concerns, particularly about being expected to fund the €2 million construction cost themselves. They pointed out that similar facilities at nearby resorts had been developed without direct financial contributions from their owners.
There was also debate over whether a publicly accessible facility should really be funded privately, especially when nearby sports centres in San Javier and Los Alcázares have been built using public money – facilities which were already in use and easily accessible to people on Roda Golf Resort.
Despite the opposition to that particular project, Roda Golf & Beach Resort has seen the value in creating a privately funded padel and pickleball centre, and it is welcoming players already. Time will tell whether it really was worth the investment by the private financiers, or whether it will turn out to be a white elephant.
