Cabo Roig turns green as thousands celebrate St Patrick's Day parade
Music, floats, bagpipes and plenty of Guinness drew huge crowds to Orihuela Costa’s biggest international celebration
Thousands of people packed the streets of Cabo Roig on Sunday March 15 as the area once again turned green for the annual Saint Patrick’s Day parade, one of the biggest and most colourful celebrations on the Orihuela Costa calendar.
Crowds lined the route, particularly along Calle Cielo, to watch the parade roll through in a lively mix of music, costumes and colourful floats. Over the years the event has grown steadily in both size and reputation, and it’s now widely considered the largest Saint Patrick’s Day parade in Europe outside Ireland.
Things got underway at 3pm when the parade set off along Calle Mar and Calle Cielo, quickly turning the area into a huge street party. Groups, performers and local associations made their way along the route while crowds cheered, waved flags and soaked up the atmosphere. Before long the celebrations naturally spilled into the surrounding bars and terraces, where pints of Guinness were flowing throughout the afternoon.The parade itself offered a little bit of everything. Motorcyclists cruised through alongside traditional bagpipers, while stilt walkers, dance groups and even a group of judokas added their own touch to the procession. And of course, leprechauns, shamrocks, rainbows, treasure chests and plenty of Irish flags popped up throughout the parade.
Every year the event brings together thousands of people from the many nationalities that make up the community along Orihuela Costa, along with visitors from across the municipality who come specifically to enjoy the celebrations.Despite its growing popularity, the parade originally started as a local grassroots initiative and still runs with only a relatively small municipal budget.
Over the years, Saint Patrick’s Day in Cabo Roig has grown into the most important celebration on the coast, reflecting the international character of the area where residents from many different countries live side by side.Once again this year, the turnout showed just how popular the event has become, with residents and visitors alike the streets to enjoy one of the liveliest days of the year on the coast.
