More than 1,300 heat-related emergencies in Andalucía as authorities warn this heatwave could last 20 days
The regional health minister is urging people to take the current conditions seriously, with Córdoba among the areas expected to be worst affected
Andalucía's regional government is calling for caution as the current heatwave tightens its grip, with more than 1,300 emergency callouts for heat-related illness already recorded across the region.June 2026 was already Spain's deadliest month for heat in recorded history, with more than 1,000 lives lost, and the summer has shown no sign of relenting since.
Antonio Sanz, First Vice President and Minister of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies, spoke to reporters on Monday after inaugurating a new airfield in Villaviciosa de Córdoba that will serve the Infoca firefighting service. He described the situation as one of "logical concern," warning that this heatwave is "very intense" and could last as long as 20 days. Córdoba, he said, is among the places "where the heat wave could be most powerful."
"We are dealing with many emergencies," Sanz said. "We have seen nearly 1,300 emergencies due to heat-related illnesses, and I want to emphasise the need for caution, awareness, prevention and responsibility on the part of citizens."
A second heatwave had already begun pushing temperatures back up across the country earlier this month, and the current episode is shaping up to be the most prolonged of the summer so far.
Sanz was specific about who faces the greatest risk. While the heat is dangerous for everyone, he highlighted children, the elderly and people with pre-existing health conditions as particularly vulnerable. Among those who have already died from the heatwave in Andalucía, he said, "a good number had pre-existing conditions that, logically, have been aggravated as a result of the heat wave or they could not withstand it."
None of it is complicated, but in extreme heat the basics genuinely save lives. Stay constantly hydrated, avoid going out during the hottest hours, wear light breathable clothing and a hat, and seek shade or air-conditioned spaces where possible. Cut down on heavy meals and intense physical activity while temperatures remain extreme.
