Orihuela takes major step forward in pedestrian bridge for Lomas de Cabo Roig
The long-awaited pedestrian and cycle path over the Orihuela Costa AP-7 motorway is one step closer to becoming a reality
It’s certainly been a long time coming, but Orihuela City Council has finally put out to tender one of the most requested projects in Orihuela Costa in recent years: the pedestrian footbridge and cycle path over the AP-7 motorway on the road to Lomas de Cabo Roig.
Incredibly, this vital infrastructure has suffered a two-decade delay and countless accidents and near-misses have occurred on the busy stretch, which is the main artery linking bustling inland residential areas with the coast.
This tender, the contract for drafting the overall project, is the first step toward making it a reality. It comes with a price tag of €86,300 and a four-month deadline for its completion. Once the successful bidder has completed this task, the City Council will take the next, final step: putting the building works themselves out to tender. Approximately €1.3 million will be allocated for building the bridge.
“The purpose of the project is to design a cycle-pedestrian walkway that guarantees traffic flow with an adequate level of safety,” explained Matías Ruiz, Councillor for Urban Development. The solution involves connecting it to the access ramps of the existing municipal road system, Calle Creus and San Miguel Road.
The structural solution will consider mixed bicycle and pedestrian use, with a clear width of no less than 1.8 metres and a two-way bicycle lane of at least 2.5 metres.
“This is an important step in advancing the construction project for this footbridge, which has been so highly demanded by coastal residents for so many years, and we have managed to unblock the road so that it can become a reality as soon as possible” the councillor added.
The walkway will also be illuminated with energy-efficient LED lighting.
